Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett make a great team in Gillian Armstrong's
1997 adaptation of Peter Carey's novel. In England, circa the mid-1800s, an outcast Anglican priest (is there such a thing?) and a liberated Australian heiress meet on a ship. Discovering their mutual passion for taking risks and living the fast 19th century life, the priest makes a wager that he can safely move a glass church from the heiress' city glass factory all the way to a new home in the Australian outback. Needless to say, that this is surely a daring adventure in the making. --JA |
