Having recently lost his father under mysterious circumstances, the melancholy prince of Denmark is ill-equipped to cope with his mother's speedy remarriage to his usurping uncle. Still, when his father's ghost puts it all in perspective, Hamlet springs into action, sort of, while pausing at regular intervals to ruminate on the human condition.
Kenneth Branagh famously secured an Academy Award nomination for this film by not touching a single word of his source text and presenting it uncut for the first time in motion picture history (the BBC version featuring Derek Jacobi is also uncut, but that's TV so it doesn't count). In addition to his directing and adapting duties, Branagh takes centre stage, with a very aggressive take on the indecisive prince. He's joined by Kate Winslet as Ophelia, Derek Jacobi as Claudius, Julie Christie as Gertrude and in cameo appearances, Charlton Heston, John Gielgud, Judi Dench, Robin Williams and Jack Lemmon. --EH |
