Filmmaker Linda Hattendorf met Jimmy (an 81-year-old Japanese American artist) while he was living on the streets outside a NYC Korean grocery, where he survived by selling his drawings to passers-by. Hattendorf's documentary about the man and the experiences that inform his work and world view is a sad one, but his tenacious independence keeps it from being depressing while the film avoids any intrusive narration or emotional contrivances.
The winner of an impressive 15 awards at 14 different film festivals, and an official 2006 VIFF selection. --RB
