Two Irish brothers are drawn into the IRA in this award-winning historical drama from Ken Loach. Damien (Cillian Murphy) is a young doctor about to take a post in London when atrocities by British soldiers convince him to stay and take up a gun alongside brother Teddy (Padraic Delaney). Several reprisals later, a treaty brings the creation of the Irish Free State, reaction to which fractures Irish solidarity and brings a civil war that pits brother against brother. Renowned for his social realist directing style and the naturalistic, seemingly improvised performances of his actors, Loach won Best Film at the Cannes Film Festival. --SD
