When asked about "Inland Empire", writer-director David Lynch said "It's about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery, and that's all I want to say about it." Lynch allegedly filmed without a script as such, writing each day's scenes the night before as he went.
So what's it about? Laura Dern stars as a movie star whose new project for director Jeremy Irons leads her into some strange territory indeed... and some interesting questions. What's up with the creepy woman who claims to be her neighbour? Is she having an affair with her co-star or is it all in her head? Who's the melancholy woman watching talking rabbits on her television? Who's hiding in the back of the studio? Who's having an affair with whom? Who's dreaming this dream, anyway?
A viewing of "Inland Empire" may raise more questions than it answers. The National Society of Film Critics gave it a special award for Best Experimental Film, calling it "a magnificent and maddening experiment with digital video possibilities". It also earned the Future Film Festival Digital Award at the Venice Film Festival. --SD |
