In 1984 East Germany, a loyal secret policeman (Ulrich Mühe) is assigned by a party member to spy on a playwright (Sebastian Koch ) and his actress girlfriend (Martina Gedeck). But as he sets to his work, the Stasi officer's dedication to his task begins to take on a different tone. His quarry may not be the enemies of the state that they appear to be, and the party member to whom he answers has his own agenda. Pulled deeper and deeper into the lives of the two artists, he soon finds his own world threatened by the system to which he's given his life.
"The Lives Of Others" set a record for the most German Film Award nominations (eleven), winning seven including Best Picture, and went on to win an Oscar for Best Foreign Film. --SD |
