It all starts with a daring jewel robbery in broad daylight. Following this the betrayal begins, as Wanda (Jamie Lee Curtis) plots to get all the loot to herself by turning in the ringleader. Unfortunately for her, the loot was moved and the only way she can find its location is by cozying up to his barrister (John Cleese). Providing no help whatsoever is her boyfriend Otto (Kevin Kline) whose tragically ironic mantra is "Don't Call Me Stupid". Also figuring prominently is a fishtank tended by stuttering accomplice Ken (Michael Palin).
"A Fish Called Wanda" is probably the most fondly remembered non-Python outing for Michael Palin and John Cleese, but amazingly, theirs is not the most impressive comic pedigree on the film. Director Charles Crichton cut his teeth in British comedy in the 50s making films like "The Lavender Hill Mob" and "The Titfield Thunderbolt". The film earned Oscar nominations for best direction and original screenplay and netted a Supporting Actor win for Kevin Kline.
This new special edition offers an audio commentary from Cleese, 25 minutes of deleted scenes, a documentary on the making of the film and several other fishy tidbits. --EH |
