"Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York." Al Pacino directs and stars in this study of Shakespeare's "Richard III". Part documentary, part rehearsal, part performance, the film is a lively introduction to the Bard and a fresh look for hard-core thespians. Pacino takes the audience through the process of working on the text, looking at poetic imagery and the history of the War of the Roses, then putting the play on its feet with actors like Alec Baldwin, Kevin Spacey, and even Winona Ryder (as the woman that Richard claims he'll have, but not keep long).
This is no dry recital of centuries-old text. Pacino is keenly aware of the difficulties in making the play accessible for a contemporary American audience, and he peps up the proceedings with man-on-the-street interviews and visits to Shakespeare's birthplace and the historic Globe theatre. (Tip: Makes a great double feature with Ian McKellen's "Richard III"). --SD |
